@@@ Charming Axe: Gathering Days (Self-released, 2014). Rootsy Americana I got to via a music publicist. Opens up acapella with a big swelling organ in the opener, Close Your Eyes and painfully pretty vocals in the second tune Beyond the blue. It’s great to hear some younger musicians not oversinging but hitting the notes and singing at a very high level. It reminds of both Martha Redbone’s record using the poems of Robert Blake as well as Chatham County Line’s great live recording, Sight and Sound. The recording sounds really good and it’s very tastefully done. I’m going to circle back to this record and check it out more thoroughly when I have the time, but it’s probably going to be on my best of 2014 list.
