Charming Axe sings 3-part Appalachia to perfection...
It is not surprising that Appalachian harmony made its way to Chicago and infected Rob Newhouse, Eugenia Elliott and Hannah Hill, collectively known as Charming Axe. Not surprising because it’s happened before, right? Northern youngsters latch onto Appalachian songs and can’t let go. And we are all the better for it. We are lucky that these three pure voices found each other.
Their album, Gathering Days, has 15 songs, and about half are covers and half originals. You’ll be surprised at the covers. Take James Taylor’s “You Can Close Your Eyes.” Charming Axe strips the song down to three part harmony in such a way that the song becomes their own. You can hear the album on NewFolkRadio.com.
